Circuit history:
When racing in Europe was threatened by the Suez crisis, attention turned to venues further afield. In 1957 and with the blessing of King Mohammed V, the Royal Automobile Club of Morocco created a new circuitusing the public roads of the Ain-Diab area of Casablanca, the desert road towards Azemmour and the coast road through the Sidi Abderhaman Forest.
The first race was a non championship F1 race won by Jean Behra in a Maserati, but it is the following year's race that is remembered by most people. The final round of the World Championship, it saw a title showdown between Stirling Moss and Mike Hawthorn. Moss won the race, but Hawthorn took the title - Britain's first.
