Circuit history

A sweeping classic circuit at Pinetown near Durban, with evocatively-named corners. The circuit was active in the 1950s and 1960s but fell into disuse. The land has now been redeveloped, although there are echoes of the past with many businesses now boasting an address on Circuit Road!

A sad piece of history associated with the track is the death of two-time Motorcycle World Champion Gary Hocking. The Welsh-born Rhodesian crashed at the Devil's Leap Corner in 1962 at the wheel of a Lotus-Climax in practice for the Natal GP. Ironically, the double IoM TT winner had switched to car racing after becoming disillusioned with mtorocycle racing following the death of close friend Tom Phillis.
