Circuit history:

Sentul Circuit was the first attempt to build a Formula One-standard circuit outside of Japan, altough it has never held a round of that series.

Built by Hutomo Mandala Putra, son of President Suharto, the circuit opened in 1994 and held rounds of the World Superbike series between 1994 and 1997, as well as the Motorcycle World Championships in 1996-97. The collapse of the Asian economy meant the loss of major racing however until 2006, when the A1 Grand Prix series held a well-attended event.
