Circuit history:

Hidden away in the hills north of Rome, Vallelunga is close to several lakes and surrounded by vineyards, making it popular with teams and drivers.

Vallelunga opened in 1951 as a tiny dirt oval track, but by 1958 had been paved for circuit racing.

In 1963 the circuit was reconstructed, with a greatly extended course blasting its way through a hillside allied to a new twisting infield complex. At the same time, the direction of racing was switched to clockwise.

1971 saw further work, with a refurbishment of many facilities, including the building of new pits and a towering main grandstand. Two chicanes were also added for motorcycle racers.

Once a regular host of Formula 2 and Formula 3000, Vallelunga has fallen out of favour with the authorities in recent years, although it did host a poorly-attended round of the European Le Mans Series in 2001.

A major refurbishment was proposed in 2004 and the circuit was extended to a midly modified design in 2005. The revised course could see Vallelunga re-establish itself as an international racing venue once more, and looks set to secure its status as a valued testing facility.
