Circuit history:
Russia's oldest racing facility, the Neva Ring in St Petersburg has enjoyed a revival in recent years. Situated in the shadow of the 60,000 seat Kirov stadium, the circuit has hosted races since the 1960s.
New facilities at Bikernieki (now in Latvia) and Chaika (now in Ukraine) spelled the closure of the Neva Ring in the 1980s, but with the break-up of the Soviet Union, Russia again found a need for the circuit. In 1993 it re-opened to host the only race in the national championships, while the next visit came in 1996.
In 1997 the track underwent significant changes: barriers were added and nearly half of the track surface was repaved. During the winter of '97-98 the resurfacing project was finished, while the first chicane was added in order to slow the cars down. A proper pit lane and paddock area were also added.
The improvements continued in 1999, with gravel traps and a second chicane added, as well as a computerised scoring system. Unfortunately, redevelopment works on the central stadium has now forced an end to racing, although it could be revived in future years.
