Circuit history:
Chicago Motor Speedway was created when Chip Ganassi teamed up with Charles Bidwell II to convert a disused horse track into a 1.029-mile oval, supposedly a modernized version of the famous Milwaukee Mile.
Uniquely, the pitlane and warm-up lane which run parallel to the paved oval could be covered with a rubber-based surface and dirt to create a horse track when car racing was not being held.
Opened in 1999, the circuit boasted good facilities and its position in Cicero, just outside of Chicago, should have guaranteed good crowds. The circuit hosted CART races from 199 to 2002 but attendences were poor in the latter years and the costs of converting the track for each form of racing soon proved too high. Motor racing ceased in 2002 but horse racing continues on the dirt and turf ovals.
