Brands Hatch set for revamp

The historic Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit is set to undergo changes before the 2002 season - despite losing out on the chance to host the British GP to Silverstone.

The famous Dingle Dell section of track will be realigned to run inside the current layout, providing greater run-off.

Hawthorn and Westfield bends are likely to receive similar modifications in future years. Planning restrictions imposed because of nearby residential areas preclude keeping the existing layout and extending gravel traps.

The work comes after demands from the FIM, the governing body of motorcyle racing, for safety improvements. The annual World Superbike Championship round is the circuit's biggest event.

Brands owners Octagon say the changes should still mean that the venue will retain its character. The changes are much less radical than would have been needed to secure the Grand Prix, which could have meant closure of the circuit for up to 12 months.
