Indoor ovals the future?
Rain delays and race meeting washouts are set to become a thing of the past thanks to a brand new indoor oval in Pittsburgh, USA - and plans are already being laid for a similar facility in Germany.
The one-mile Pittsburgh oval is due for completion in 2002 and problems of ventilation and sound-proofing are thought to have already been solved. The scheme is the brainchild Brant Motorsports, which has commissioned the Dick Corporation to build the track, which will seat 60,000 spectators.
The Pittsburgh Auto Racing Complex, which will be built next to the city airport, will incorporate a road circuit and drag circuit as well as the oval. It will cost in the region of $600 million.
Dick is now talking to potential operators for the German track, which could be built on a site close to Stuttgart. A full-size oval and infield circuit are included in the plans, for which funding is now being sought.
