The California Speedway at Fontana is to build an infield course within the boundaries of the two mile oval, in an effort to attract more varied events to the facility.
The new course will feature four different variations: a 2.88 mile, 21-turn competition course, a 2.36 mile motorcycle course and two club/school courses. A street-legal drag strip is also planned.
"The development of this road course increases the opportunities for us to host additional events that motorsports fans in southern California want to experience," said California Speedway president, Bill Miller.
Preliminary discussions have taken place with AMA and Grand-Am, and professional road racing events could be scheduled by 2002.
