Turkey has become the latest country to put forward plans to host a Formula 1 race.

A race around the streets of Istanbul is being studied by Turkish officials who hope to establish the country on the world stage.

A budget of around £40 million is understood to be needed, but Turkish businesses have given the project only lukewarm support.

"The FIA are looking on this project very warmly," said Mamtaz Tahincioglu, head of the Turkish automobile federation. "My aim is to take on this project and overcome all obstacles."

One potential obstable, however, is likely to be Turkey's ban on tobacco advertising which could seriously damage the chances of landing a Grand Prix against other countries without such a ban.
