CART to get 'own Monte-Carlo'
St Petersburg has held races for sports cars before, on this two mile street course. Now CART wants to bring racing back to the streets of the Florida City on a new course by the harbour.
CART could have its own 'jewel-in-the-crown' race around the streets of St Petersberg in western Florida, according to Long Beach promotor Chris Pook.
Pook, who has been charged by CART with seeking out new street tracks in key US markets, says a race in 2003 around the waterfront is only a step away.
The city mayor has given backed the plans, meaning the venue could find itself in the opening slot on the 2003 calendar.
"St Petersburg is a magnificent, historical Florida city, and the setting for the event is truly unique," said an enthusiastic Pook. "When the circuit is built and our friends from all over the southeastern United States bring their luxury yachts to the harbour we will have another Monte-Carlo."
The proposed circuit overlooks Tampa Bay and incorporates city streets and the runways of the Albert Whitted Airport.
