St Petersburg backed by council

The city council of St Petersburg has backed proposals for a street race around the bayfront area.

They gave their permission to Long Beach GP promotors to run the event for CART cars next year on a course incorporating one of the runways of the Albert Whitted Airport, as well as city streets.

The city's mayor had already given his approval for the scheme, which would see racing return to St Petersburg for the first time since 1995.
