A new motor racing circuit in Perth, Australia, could host the Formula Nippon Championship next Februrary, series officials have announced.

Developments on the new Perth Raceway are said to be well advanced, with Government approval expected soon for the new track next to Perth International Airport.

The figure-of-eight track will have two layouts of 2.4 miles/4.0km and 3.8 miles/6.2km in length, built to Formula 1 standards.

The Formula Nippon race in Perth would be the first of a projected international expansion for the previously Japan-confined championship.

Representatives of the promoters, Westrend Corporation, visited Japan in November last year and were very impressed with the professionalism of the Formula Nippon Championship and agreed to bring the race to Western Australia as one of their major annual races on the new circuit.

"I look forward to staging the Formula Nippon race in Perth and for Western Australia to be part of this exciting race," said Ross Roberts, managing director of Westrend Corporation.
