Perth's circuit scheme canned?
Reports from Australia suggest that the plans for a new international racing circuit in Perth have been scrapped.
Details of a 3.8 miles/6.2km circuit were revealed by the Westrend Corporation earlier this year, after agreement was reached with organisers of the Formula Nippon championship to host a round of the series in February 2003.
But with less than six months to go before the circuit is due to be ready, the scheme seems in disarray with no Government approval for work to begin.
Australia's governing body of motorsport is also unaware of the project, saying that while it "noted with interest the proposed plan to develop a Formula One-style grand prix track on land at the Perth Airport" it had not been formally approached with an application for a track licence or been provided with any information on the venture.
CAMS (Confederation of Australian Motor Sport) would normally be involved in the issuing of a track licence for a track of this type.
"In this scenario it would be typical for the company or promoter developing the track to write to CAMS outlining their proposed plans and we would then arrange inspections and ensure that all the correct approvals have been sought from local governments, land owners and the like", said Simon Webb, acting chief executive officer of CAMS.
"We can then ensure that tracks in Australia have a high standard of safety measures for competitors, officials and spectators and that they provide appropriate facilities for the type of events that they intend to hold at the track."
