Barcelona revises layout for F1
Spain's Circuit de Catalunya is to add a new overtaking opportunity by tightening its La Caixa corner for Formula One racers.
F1 cars will now brake and turn earlier for the tightened corner, with an asphalt run-off area beyond to encourage overtaking manoeuvres. A short 100 metres straight will link the new corner to the Banc Sabadell turn. It is thought that the original circuit will still be used by other categories of racing.
The change is part of a raft of winter updates at the circuit near Barcelona, all aimed at improving facilities. Other changes include improvements to the Repsol bridge; resurfacing work on the main straight; and the repositioning of retaining walls at Repsol and Seat, moving them further from the track.
The wall repositioning work has already started and will not affect activity on the track. It is scheduled to finish on January 12.
The second phase of work begins on December 9 and finishes on January 15 and will include the creation of the new track section and asphalting work.
