First look at new Anglesey track

Here is the first look at ambitious proposals to redevelop the Anglesey racing circuit into a multipurpose motorsport venue.

The owners of the Welsh island circuit have received planning permission from Anglesey County Council to extend the track by turning it around 90 degrees.

The circuit has held car racing at the former Ty Croes army base since 1997 on a 1.05 mile track. It has proved a success, hosting a busy club racing and track day calendar.

Now owners the Bodorgan Estate hope to turn the track into one of the UK's best centres for motorsport, lengthening it to around 2.0 miles.

Only a very short part of the current course will be retained in the new circuit, which has been designed by operations consultant Richard Peacock.

He told Autosport magazine that the decision to use only a short part of the current track was deliberate.

"One of the reasons for turning the circuit round is that we can continue to use the existing one during the construction work," he said.

"With motorcycle racing, rallycross, sprints and single-stage rallies taking place on more than 40 weekends per year, plus a racing school and track days, it is vitally important that Anglesey Circuit remains open.

"Its growing popularity among competitors also makes it a major contributor to the economy of both the island and North Wales," he added.

Funding is thought to largely be in place and tenders for the work have been invited. Earthworks could begin as early as this summer.
