Pit facilities at Australia's famous Mount Panorama circuit in Bathurst have been reduced to rubble, ahead of a rebuild programme.

The construction of the new, multi-purpose pit and paddock complex is aimed at securing the future of motor racing on the Mount, according to Bathurst City Council.

The new facilities are stage one of a long-term plan to redevelop the whole Mount Panorama area. Initial work addresses the changing needs of drivers and teams, as well as changing safety regulations that govern motorsport.

The improvements include:

  • 15m x 8m garages fronting onto pit lane, with access at rear for transporters to unload cars directly into the garage;
  • a more level pit and paddock area;
  • improved spectator mounds around the track;
  • new corporate suites, administration and media facilities.

The new buildings are being paid for with a $10 million grant from the New South Wales state government. Further funding is anticipated to allow the development of tourism and recreation facilities right the way around the Mount.
