The German city of Düsseldorf has commissioned a feasbility study to investigate the possibility of staging a round of the DTM series on its streets.
The City Council has asked the Univesity of Cologne to assess the impact of such a race on the city's economy, according to the Mayor, Joachim Erwin.
The announcement came at a special DTM launch event, which saw stars such as Mika Hakkinen, Tom Kristensen, Jean Alesi and Bernd Schneider pilot their cars along the famous Königsallee in front of 138,000 spectators.
It is thought any circuit would likely be based around the city's exhibition centre, rather than the narrow streets around Königsallee.
Düsseldorf street race would make an attractive event for the DTM. As well as being virtually guaranteed large crowds, the city is home to several major sponsors and is a centre for the German financial, fashion and communications industries.
