Talladega Superspeedway has begun its first repaving project for nearly 30 years, with diggers moving in to break up the asphalt surface.

Workman from Sunmount Corporation, based in Justin, Texas, began the mammoth project just after daybreak on Tuesday, a day after it hosted the rain-delayed Aaron's 499 NASCAR race.

Track officials say the work should be completed by September 15, exactly three weeks before the autumn race weekend begins with the ARCA/REMAX Series Food World 250.

Crews will work seven days a week to make sure the project is completed in time, officials said.

The track has not been repaved since 1979.
